A new tool makes it easier to apply for rental assistance

Applying for Housing Choice Vouchers, also known as Section 8 Vouchers, through Idaho Housing and Finance Association (IHFA) just got a lot easier.

“We’re excited to announce that we now have an online portal for applicants,” said Lisa Stevens, senior manager for Idaho Housing’s Rental Assistance Program.

Applicants no longer have to print and mail their application or drop it off at an IHFA branch office, though those are still options.

Applicants can go to the online portal and apply for a Housing Choice Voucher. You’ll need to make an account with a username and password and will use this account to access your application in the future. When applying, you will still need to provide much of the same information as you did when completing a paper application, including your name, preference, income, family members, etc. You will also need to specify to which Idaho Housing branch office you’re applying.

Stevens said one benefit of an online application process is an applicant can sign in and make updates or changes to the application. They can change their family member size, income, preference, etc. without having to either call or go into one of the IHFA branch offices. Stevens adds it’s not only convenient for the applicant, but also those reviewing the application because it allows staff to review the application more quickly.

The online portal is just another tool that allows applicants to apply for rental assistance. Applicants can still apply for Housing Choice Vouchers by downloading the application and accompanying paperwork from IHFA’s website or by going to one of the five  Idaho Housing branch offices.

It’s important to know that whether you fill out paperwork, go into one of the branch offices, or apply online, the application is time stamped. Once your preliminary eligibility is determined you’re placed on the waiting list of your choosing for a voucher. The online portal does not eliminate the waiting period to receive rental assistance.

“We’re excited to offer the convenience of online applications for our Housing Choice Voucher Program to our applicants,” Stevens said.
