$97,000 grant will help Idahoans prevent foreclosure

Idaho Housing and Finance Association (IHFA) recently received a $97,000 grant from the National Foreclosure Mitigation Counseling Program that will bolster its efforts to provide counseling to Idaho homeowners in danger of foreclosure.

IHFA has provided foreclosure prevention counseling to more than 11,500 Idahoans in the past five years. Approximately four of five homeowners who use the free service, which is available to all homeowners regardless of their lender, have positive outcomes.

Professional counselors act as intermediaries between borrowers and mortgage lenders and help homeowners understand their options, which could include modifying or refinancing a loan, a repayment plan, or a short sale.

“Although the foreclosure rate in Idaho continues to decline, requests for free counseling remains consistent as many Idahoans continue to face mortgage payment issues,” said IHFA President Gerald M. Hunter. “If homeowners are concerned about missing a mortgage payment, we encourage them to contact us right away to discuss their options.”
